New Fall Events Include an Indie Music Fest and an Extreme Run
Sandbanks Provincial Park is hosting Sandbanks New Waves the new indie fest in mid-September. We’ll be there serving food and drink. Grapes of Wrath is also new this year. It’s an extreme run also planned in mid-September with proceeds going to the Canadian Cancer Society and local healthcare foundations. If you decide to sign up, we have new suites with outdoor hot tubs for pre run warm up or post run R&R. The annual PEC Studio Tour is a chance to visit some of the county’s artists at work. Waring House artist-in-residence, Aidan Haley is included. If you’re a County wine lover, be on the look out for PEC grape harvest parties. This journalist’s review is a fun read of the Norm Hardie Winery party last fall. And… TASTE is back! September 27th is this year’s date. It’s a chance to mingle with an amazing number of local producers all under one roof. Tickets go fast. http://www.tastecommunitygrown.com/
Book mid week for the Best Rates
For the best Waring House room rate, try mid-week anytime between Sunday and Thursday. The County still has plenty to keep you entertained without the weekend crowds. Our own Barley Room Pub has live entertainment every Thursday night and the Waring House Cookery offers mid-week evening classes. Eat what you cook, paired with your choice of local wine or beer. County roads are less traveled mid-week and there are plenty of local shops, antique places, art galleries and museums to browse in PEC communities.
Prince Edward County by Bike
Exploring the County by bike is easy, so we get lots of urban cyclists booking a stay with us every fall. We keep bike repair kits on hand, offer secure on-site storage and our front desk has County cycling maps to help you plan a tour. If you don’t own a two-wheeler or don’t want to pack your bike, you can always rent one in nearby Bloomfied. For more information on biking in the area, visit Ontario by Bike.
The Waring House sits smack dab in the middle of Ontario’s fastest growing wine region. Thirty-five wineries offer tastings and some have tours. Fifteen are now VQA. This latest VQA vintage report may be helpful for selecting wines to go home with. Wineries and restaurants host wine pairing dinners all fall including our own Amelia’s Garden.
County beer news
Barley Days Brewery, just a minute’s drive west of the Waring House, offers tastings and tours on Saturdays and its retail store is open 7 days a week. I tried and liked its new Sacred Rock, a sparkling ale that blurs the lines between beer and wine at the Great Canadian Cheese Festival last June. If you’re here in October, try Barley Days’ County IPA which is made from a blend of five hops including four types grown right here in The County.
Nothing like a little Prince Edward County cheese to pair with that local vintage or County cider you just bought. I’m a big fan of the aged cheddar and fresh curds from Black River Cheese, a local dairy farmers cooperative. Fifth Town Artisan Cheese Co. on the southeastern side of Prince Edward County has an amazing selection of artisan cheeses from across Ontario and abroad.
The Waring House Inn and its cookery are in the news
The News Herald, a daily newspaper in suburban Cleveland has just published two Prince Edward County stories based on food and travel editor, Janet Podolak’s recent visit. At least one of the articles is already getting pick up elsewhere. Ms Podolak stayed at the Waring House Inn and spent a weekend touring the County. Besides a cookery lesson with our cookery chef, Jordon McGuinnis, Ms Podolak attended this year’s Great Canadian Cheese Festival at the Crystal Palace on the Picton fairgrounds.. Here’s a link to her County story A Waring House cookery story even includes some fun recipes from Jordon’s home-smoking class, http://www.morningjournal.com/lifestyle/20140805/girlfriends-cooking-class-yields-easy-recipes-to-add-to-repertoire
And from Hotel-Scoop.com a recent Waring House review by Vancouver-based writer, Carolyn Heller, Ms Heller who is originally from Boston is also a guidebook author with Moon Travel Guides of Seattle. The second edition of her Ontario guide by Moon is to be released soon.
