Prince Edward County In Fall

New Fall Events Include an Indie Music Fest and an Extreme Run

Sandbanks Provincial Park is hosting Sandbanks New Waves the new indie fest in mid-September. We’ll be there serving food and drink. Grapes of Wrath is also new this year. It’s an extreme run  also  planned in mid-September with proceeds going to the Canadian Cancer Society and local healthcare foundations. If you decide to sign up, we have new suites with outdoor hot tubs for pre run warm up or post run R&R. The annual PEC Studio Tour is a chance to visit some of the county’s artists at work. Waring House artist-in-residence, Aidan Haley is included. If you’re a County wine lover, be on the look out for PEC grape harvest parties. This journalist’s review is a fun read of the Norm Hardie Winery party last fall. And… TASTE is back! September 27th is this year’s date. It’s a chance to mingle with an amazing number of local producers all under one roof. Tickets go fast.

Bike Touring in Prince Edward County

Book mid week for the Best Rates

For the best Waring House room rate, try mid-week anytime between Sunday and Thursday. The County still has plenty to keep you entertained without the weekend crowds. Our own Barley Room Pub has live entertainment every Thursday night and the Waring House Cookery offers mid-week evening classes. Eat what you cook, paired with your choice of local wine or beer. County roads are less traveled mid-week and there are plenty of local shops, antique places, art galleries and museums to browse in PEC communities.

Prince Edward County by Bike

Fall vintages

The Waring House sits smack dab in the middle of Ontario’s fastest growing wine region. Thirty-five wineries offer tastings and some have tours. Fifteen are now VQA. This latest VQA vintage report may be helpful for selecting wines to go home with. Wineries and restaurants host wine pairing dinners all fall including our own Amelia’s Garden.

County beer news

Barley Days Brewery, just a minute’s drive west of the Waring House, offers tastings and tours on Saturdays and its retail store is open 7 days a week. I tried and liked its new Sacred Rock, a sparkling ale that blurs the lines between beer and wine at the Great Canadian Cheese Festival last June. If you’re here in October, try Barley Days’ County IPA which is made from a blend of five hops including four types grown right here in The County.

Say cheese

Nothing like a little Prince Edward County cheese to pair with that local vintage or County cider you just bought. I’m a big fan of the aged cheddar and fresh curds from Black River Cheese, a local dairy farmers cooperative. Fifth Town Artisan Cheese Co. on the southeastern side of Prince Edward County has an amazing selection of artisan cheeses from across Ontario and abroad.

Prince Edward County Travel

Prince Edward County Travel Might Be the Cure to the Big City Blues.

Planning a short vacation can be a daunting task. The seemingly endless choice of places to travel and things to try can be almost paralyzing. Most of us get so little time away from our routines, that we really want to make our time away count, so finding a place that allows us to do many different, but novel things is important. While there’s no perfect vacation spot for everyone, Prince Edward County travel may be just the thing you’re looking for.

“The County” as it’s referred to by the local crowd, is the perfect place to escape city life. The area, about 2 1/2 hours’ drive from both Toronto and Ottawa, is free from the bustle and chaos of the big city. Yet, there isn’t a shortage of things to do while visiting. In fact, MacLean’s Magazine recently ranked Prince Edward County as one of the 10 must-see places in Canada. Check out their video here:

The Wines

wine bottle, Prince Edward County TravelPrince Edward County has become synonymous with great wine. After little more than 15 years, the area has developed a vibrant viticulture scene, boasting over 30 wineries in a fairly small area. This means that wine lovers can check out multiple wineries without  spending their whole trip in the car.  Many of the wineries have tasting bars and retail outlets, and some of them have restaurants attached. Find out more about the County’s many wineries from the Prince Edward County Winegrowers Association

The Food & Drink

Fresh Vegetables, Prince Edward County Travel

Fresh Vegetables available at Hagerman’s Farms, one of many market gardens in Prince Edward County

The fertile soil and availability of ingredients so fresh, they may have been picked earlier that day, make Prince Edward County the perfect place for any foodie dedicated to fresh farm-to-table cuisine. County restaurants have adopted many types of food popular in Toronto. However, here they can be made with locally grown ingredients. Beside the numerous market gardens, Prince Edward County has one of North America’s largest mushroom farms, 2 cheese factories, numerous maple syrup producers, a craft brewery, a distillery.

Sandbanks Provincial Park routinely graces any top ten list of the best beaches in Canada, and it’s no wonder why. The large dunes and the expansive sandy beaches provide the perfect place to stay cool on a hot summer’s day. See what visitors to the park said at Trip Advisor

The Fishing

The County is an angler’s dream with large stocks of walleye, bass, salmon, trout, perch, pike, and pickerel. Investigate a charter at the Prince Edward County Website.

And More

Of course there’s much more to do than will fit in a blog post, but other ideas include boutique shopping in Bloomfield, a round of golf at the Picton Country and Country Club or the Wellington Course, shipwreck diving, pamper yourself at the spa, taking in a movie in nostalgic glory at the Regent Theatre or the Mustang Drive-In or by touring some of the County’s museums.
